Choosing the right VPS is the most important decision you’ll make for your homelab-in-the-cloud. Get it wrong and you’re overpaying, underperforming, or dealing with support nightmares.

I’ve tested all the major providers. Here’s what actually matters.

1. Hetzner — Best Price-to-Performance

Hetzner is the open secret of the self-hosting community. German company, incredible pricing, solid hardware.

What You Get

CX222 vCPU4GB40GB NVMe20TB€3.79/mo
CX324 vCPU8GB80GB NVMe20TB€6.79/mo
CX428 vCPU16GB160GB NVMe20TB€14.49/mo
CAX11 (ARM)2 vCPU4GB40GB NVMe20TB€3.79/mo

Pros

  • Cheapest quality VPS on the market — nothing comes close at this tier
  • ARM servers (Ampere) at the same price as x86
  • 20TB bandwidth included (most providers give 1-5TB)
  • Excellent API and Terraform provider
  • Datacenters in Germany, Finland, and US (Ashburn, Hillsboro)

Cons

  • US presence is newer (2 locations only)
  • No managed databases or app marketplace
  • Support is email-only (but responsive)

Best For

Self-hosters who want maximum resources per dollar. If you’re running Docker containers, Hetzner gives you 2-3x the resources of DigitalOcean at the same price.

2. DigitalOcean — Best for Beginners

DigitalOcean pioneered the “simple cloud” experience. The UI is clean, the docs are world-class, and everything just works.

What You Get

PlanvCPURAMStorageBandwidthPrice
Basic1 vCPU1GB25GB SSD1TB$4/mo
Basic1 vCPU2GB50GB SSD2TB$8/mo
Basic2 vCPU4GB80GB SSD4TB$16/mo

Pros

  • Best documentation in the industry — their tutorials alone are worth it
  • 1-Click Apps: Deploy Nextcloud, GitLab, WordPress in seconds
  • Managed databases, Kubernetes, load balancers
  • 15 datacenter regions worldwide
  • $200 free credit for new accounts (60 days)

Cons

  • Expensive for what you get — Hetzner gives 4x the resources at similar prices
  • Bandwidth caps are tight (1TB on the $4 plan)
  • No ARM servers

Best For

Beginners who want a smooth experience and don’t mind paying a premium. Great if you value documentation and ecosystem.

3. Vultr — Best US-Based All-Rounder

Vultr sits between Hetzner’s pricing and DigitalOcean’s polish. 32 locations worldwide, hourly billing, and solid performance.

What You Get

PlanvCPURAMStorageBandwidthPrice
Cloud Compute1 vCPU1GB25GB SSD1TB$5/mo
Cloud Compute2 vCPU4GB100GB SSD3TB$20/mo
High Frequency1 vCPU1GB32GB NVMe1TB$6/mo

Pros

  • 32 locations — more than any competitor
  • Hourly billing (spin up, test, destroy)
  • Bare metal servers available ($120/mo)
  • Kubernetes, load balancers, block storage
  • Marketplace with 1-click apps

Cons

  • UI is functional but not as polished as DigitalOcean
  • Support can be slow on lower tiers
  • Pricing is closer to DigitalOcean than Hetzner

Best For

Users who need geographic diversity or want to test servers in specific regions. Good middle ground.

4. Oracle Cloud — Best Free Tier (Seriously)

Oracle Cloud’s Always Free tier is absurdly generous. You get ARM servers with 4 cores and 24GB RAM — free forever.

Free Tier Includes

  • 4 ARM Ampere cores (up to 4 VMs)
  • 24GB RAM total
  • 200GB block storage
  • 10TB outbound bandwidth/mo
  • 2 AMD VMs (1 core, 1GB each) also free

Pros

  • Best free tier in cloud computing — not even close
  • ARM Ampere processors are fast
  • Great for running Docker, Kubernetes, or a personal homelab
  • No credit card charge as long as you stay in free tier

Cons

  • Availability is a nightmare — free ARM instances are constantly “out of capacity”
  • UI is enterprise-complex (designed for corporate IT)
  • Community is smaller than DO/Vultr
  • Oracle’s reputation makes some people nervous

Best For

Budget self-hosters willing to fight for capacity. If you can get an ARM instance provisioned, it’s free enterprise-grade hosting.

Pro tip: Use a provisioning script that retries every 60 seconds. Eventually you’ll get capacity.

5. Linode (Akamai) — Solid but Fading

Linode was acquired by Akamai in 2022. It’s still decent but hasn’t innovated much since.

What You Get

PlanvCPURAMStorageBandwidthPrice
Nanode1 vCPU1GB25GB SSD1TB$5/mo
Standard2 vCPU4GB80GB SSD4TB$20/mo
Standard4 vCPU8GB160GB SSD5TB$40/mo

Pros

  • Reliable, stable platform
  • Good API
  • 11 datacenter regions
  • $100 free credit (60 days)

Cons

  • Pricing matches DigitalOcean but with fewer features
  • Innovation has slowed since Akamai acquisition
  • No ARM servers, no bare metal

Best For

Existing Linode customers who are happy with their setup. For new users, Hetzner or Vultr are better value.

Quick Decision Guide

On a budget? → Hetzner (or Oracle free tier if you’re patient)

Want easy? → DigitalOcean (use their $200 credit to test)

Need US locations? → Vultr (32 datacenters)

Want free? → Oracle Cloud ARM

Running Kubernetes? → Hetzner (cheapest managed K8s) or DigitalOcean (easiest)

What I Actually Use

For selfhostsetup.com and my personal homelab, I run:

  • Hetzner CX32 (8GB RAM) — main server for Docker containers
  • Oracle Cloud ARM — backup services and testing
  • Home Beelink Mini S12 Pro — local services (Pi-hole, Home Assistant, 15W idle)

Total cost: €6.79/mo + a one-time $170 mini PC. Can’t beat that.
